About me

A picture of my face

Hi!

My name is Danny Vilela (he/him), and I’m based out of ██████, ████████. I pinky-promised myself I’d start writing again — and here we are!

I’m currently a Machine Learning Engineer on Reddit’s core ranking team, where I get to work on exciting problems at front-page-of-the-Internet scale in Python and Go. I’m interested in building intelligent, scalable, and delightful systems.

Before Reddit, I was a Data Scientist at Hulu, where I spent almost 3 years working on off-channel content personalization. There, I was a key contributor to the systems at Hulu (and, eventually, Disney+) that bundle and send personalized content recommendations through email and push notification channels to millions of subscribers. If you ever received an untimely or irrelevant recommendation to watch Bluey, that was probably my fault.

Everything before Hulu is a bit of a blur: for a while, I was doing attempting NLP at Albert right around the explosion of pre-trained models (remember ELMO? BERT? RoBERTa??), which was pretty exciting! I’m also still recovering from working on large-scale entity resolution at a political tech startup (no, not that political tech startup). Prior to that, I graduated from New York University with a major in computer science and a handful of masters data science coursework.

You can find my résumé here, and my anti-résumé here.
